Women living in Karachi value Afghan refugees' valuable skills

Women living in Karachi value Afghan refugees' valuable skills

Women refugees in Karachi are gaining valuable skills in Afghan refugees that enable them to earn a living by making and selling fine bangles, earrings, and gloves.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) launched the Artisans Skills Development Projects for Refugees in Karachi last November.

The center for skills development lies in a small flat in Asif Square, a suburb of the city, where the majority of Afghan refugees live.
In collaboration with One Skilled One Nagar (ANAH), a Karachi-based organization supporting many small and small businesses across the country, this training center for embroidery, tailor-made and jewelry-making specializes in specialization and marketing skills.  Dozens of women - mostly Afghan refugee women - have been trained.

After months of training, the ladies showed their talent on March 4 at a fashion show jointly organized by UNHCR and Pakistani fashion designer Hema Adnan in Clifton, a magnificent area of Karachi.

The top-notch models of Pakistan showcased ceramic beads, fabrics, stones and metal ornaments while walking the cat.

The fashion show featured artists and the project in a big way, and on May 28 a group of women received their first paychecks.

"I am feeling strong and independent by earning my first job," Malaika Kahra, an Afghan refugee who trained, said in July.

He said, earning a living "increased our confidence and changed our lives.
