With the current reactor, the laboratory-generated formic acid continuously for 100 hours with negligible degradation of the reactor components. Wang suggested that the reactor could be easily modified to produce higher-value products such as acetic acid, ethanol or propanol fuels. In addition, the impellers of the device are intended to be produced on a large scale.
"The big picture is that carbon dioxide reduction is very important because of its effect on global warming and green chemical synthesis," says Wang. "If electricity comes from renewable sources such as the sun or wind, we can create a circuit that converts carbon dioxide into something important without emitting more, ”he concludes.
